Chipmunk slow with iPhone 3.0 ??

Post by coolman »

Hi,

Anyone has done benchmarks / tests with iPhone OS 3.0 (in the device) and ChipMunk?

I read in the Cocos 2d group an issue that running the Chipmunk (with the ball-falling demo) it runs at 1 fps

Oppinions?

Regards,

Pablo

I don't use Cocos 2D but I've been running Chipmunk on 3.0 for testing for a while now and have noticed nothing but smooth gameplay. It's probably a problem with Cocos 2D rather than Chipmunk.

Have you tried the ball falling demo? Runs well?

Good to know it's not a Chipmunk's issue.

I'll dig more into this at Cocos 2d group.

Can you point me to the source of the ball falling demo?

I can run it on beta 5 and see how it handles.

It's Demo3.c that comes with Chipmunk

Also would be great if you can download Cocos and test as it comes, sorry but actually I cannot risk  put an iPhone into 3.0

http://cocos2d-iphone.googlecode.com/fi ... 7.2.tar.gz

There Demo3.c it's the third demo from the ChipMunkTest target

I'm simply getting a black screen when trying to run this. Here's the console:
2009-05-10 14:03:38.303 ChipmunkTest[2165:207] Failed to load NSMainNibFile MainWindow.

Thanks,

Damm, it`s a fault from the Cocos 2D ChipMunk Demo-Info.plist that MainWindow should not be there. Yo can delete this entry in the plist "Main nib file base name"

And with the Demo3.c that comes with Chipmunk ?

I've never run the Chipmunk demos on the iPhone, but I would assume it would be fine since I've spent a lot of time with my app in Beta 5 as well as playing Scribball and both have been great.

I've never used cocos2d myself though I keep meaning to take a look at it. I also don't want to risk putting the 3.0 beta on my device after the problems that the 2.1 beta caused.

The only thing that I can think of that Chipmunk uses that would change with the OS is how malloc/free or the math routines are implemented. Other than that Chipmunk doesn't really use any OS or processor specific features.
